A remake of the 1941 horror classic, the new 'Wolf Man' film focuses on practical effects to create a truly terrifying and artistic experience. Director Leigh Whannell and makeup artist David Tuiten discuss their decision to avoid CGI and create a visceral experience for viewers.
, it is a remake of the 1941 horror flick, which was directed by George Waggner and stars Lon Chaney Jr.The video sees cast and crew members detail how they specifically wanted to use practical effects when working on the film.
“On Wolf Man, I felt the best way to approach it was most practically,” Whannell says. “I wanted to actually see it. I needed it to exist as if it was happening right in front of you. With the look of Wolf Man, I knew I wanted to do something very different. And delivered something truly artistic and horrifying.” Tuiten continues, “I thought about how we were going to make this differently and dare to step away from what had been done in the past. The make-up that Jack Pierce did, Stan Winston and Rick Baker, they’re such classics.” Pierce did the make-up for 1941’s The Wolf Man, while Winston worked on 1987’s The Monster Squad and Baker on 2010’s The Wolfman. stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead,” the synopsis for Wolf Man reads. “With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte , fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger . But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter.
