In 2021, voters in Weber County approved a $279 million bond to build a new high school, junior high, and elementary school in the district. While construction of these schools has been steadily underway, the district said the high school and elementary school are facing "some real challenges in the construction process that may negatively impact the timeframe for completion."In a letter sent to parents, guardians, and employees of West Field High, the district said it has faced significant obstacles during the construction process -- including denied access to storm drains, cement shortages, and supply-chain issues involving steel and critical rooftop units. An inspection scheduled for August 12 will determine whether or not the school is ready to open. If the school is deemed not ready, the district has created two contingency plans:This plan would only take effect if the delayed start date would be no later than Tuesday, Sept. 3, the district said. "A delayed start date of up to eight days would allow us the needed time to complete mandated tasks, be awarded occupancy of the school by the Utah State Fire Marshal, and provide school staff adequate time to prepare for the arrival of students," the district said in the letter. If it is determined the school's start date must be delayed beyond Sept. 3, the district said students will start the school year virtually beginning Sept. 3.In a letter sent to parents, guardians, and employees of the elementary school, the district said there are two possible planned adjustments. The first would be beginning school on time by utilizing certain areas of the new building that have been completed, inspected, and approved for use. If it is determined the school's start date must be delayed, the plan then would be to begin on Sept. 3, the district said. If a delay greater than two weeks is necessary, the Haven Bay community would be combined with two nearby elementary schools for a short period of time.
