A larger low-barrier warming shelter is providing more space and overnight stays for homeless people in Fairbanks.

This new facility is helping to expand protections from the harsh Fairbanks winters for those who do not have secure housing. It also serves as a low-barrier warming shelter , negating a sobriety requirement.

This is an hour earlier than last season. “The reasoning for the earlier, start opening an hour early is because it gets colder so much earlier,” said Keyda Lampkin, the program manager for Fairbanks Hopelink. The larger size of the new location has expanded the occupancy capacity from 15 to 49 people. This allows the shelter to let people stay all night.

While the increased services the shelter can provide due to the larger building is helpful, Lampkin said a more permanent, low-barrier housing solution is needed.
