US scientists achieve a groundbreaking 10 GeV electron acceleration in just 30 cm using a novel dual-laser and supersonic gas jet system.

BELLA’s dual-laser system uses a “drill” laser to create a channel in the plasma, which guides a “drive” laser that accelerates the electrons.Researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have achieved a significant milestone in laser-plasma acceleration . They have successfully accelerated electrons to an energy of 10 billion electronvolts within a distance of 30 centimeters .

The researchers have now not only exceeded this energy level but also enhanced the beam by making it more uniform and increasing the efficiency of the acceleration process. “The jets create a sheet of gas traveling at supersonic speeds, which the lasers pass through to form a plasma channel,” “Before, the plasma was essentially a black box. You knew what you put in and what came out at the end,” emphasized Carlo Benedetti, an ATAP staff scientist at BELLA.
