More than 20,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the State Pension and benefits not to be taxable.
The UK Government has rejected calls in an online petition to scrap the income tax threshold for people in receipt of the State Pension or benefits. More than 20,300 people have signed the e-petition created by Kenneth Bardsley, who argues that the taxation is “punishing pensioners and those on some benefits” and “pushing people even deeper into poverty”.
The Treasury explained: “The Government is committed to keeping taxes low to support working people keep more of what they earn and making the UK a more attractive place to live and work, whilst also ensuring the UK’s economic stability. Top Money Stories Today The full New State Pension is now worth £221.20 each week and as payments are typically made every four weeks, this amounts to £884.80 each pay period. Over the 2024/25 financial year, this is an increase of £902, taking the annual income from State Pension alone from £10,600 to £11,502.
Directly addressing the arguments in the petition over the Personal Allowance threshold of £12,570 - the amount of income that each individual may receive before paying income tax - The Treasury said it “is currently set at a level high enough to ensure that those pensioners who have not deferred their State Pension or receive a protected payment, and whose sole income is the full New State Pension or Basic State Pension do not pay any income tax”.
