University of North Texas officials cite a decades-old state law as reasons for a new UNT policy prohibiting student-led voter registration in classes.

UNT professors can no longer have student-led voter registration groups in classes as university officials point to a 1993 law that prohibits “state officers” from interfering with elections.

“We encourage students to participate in their civil responsibilities, including the right to vote,” Case said in a statement. “There are specific provisions of Texas law that prohibit using university programs, classes, etc. for political purposes.” UNT student Madeline Carles, a voter registrar with a group called MOVE Texas, said in a statement that the school’s administration had not raised concerns previously about the group’s classroom visits.

Journalism professor Tracy Everbach said she had already scheduled a day for a voter registration group to visit her class this semester, which she said she’s done multiple times since she joined UNT in 2004.
