A special election was held in Thornton Township to fill a vacant trustee position, amidst ongoing political tensions and controversy. Stephanie Wiederman won the election, replacing the resigned Jerry Jones. The absence of trustees Chris Gonzalez and Carmen Carlisle, who have refused to attend meetings, prevented the supervisor from making an appointment within the statutory timeframe. Henyard's absence from the election further amplifies the ongoing conflict.

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (CBS) -- A special election was held Tuesday to fill the vacant position of Thornton Township trustee, a role that Thornton Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard had hoped to appoint herself. Stephanie Wiederman emerged victorious in the nomination and was sworn in at the Tuesday evening assembly. She assumes the position previously held by Jerry Jones, who resigned in the fall.

Since Jones' resignation, trustees Chris Gonzalez and Carmen Carlisle had chosen not to attend meetings. Under Illinois statute, Henyard, as supervisor, had 60 days to appoint a replacement. The absence of the trustees prevented a quorum, ultimately thwarting Henyard's ability to make an appointment within the stipulated timeframe. Notably absent from the special election was Henyard herself. Wiederman, when pressed, declined to definitively state whether she would align herself with either Gonzalez and Carlisle or Henyard, stating, 'I am going to be the voice of the residents. That means I'm on the side of what I think is best for the collective.' Wiederman's term will extend until May 2025, when newly elected trustees will take office. Last month, a Democratic Party Caucus for Thornton Township resulted in Henyard being denied a place on the ballot for reelection as township supervisor. She was defeated by Illinois state Sen. Napoleon Harris, who also serves as the Thornton Township Democratic committeeman. Beyond this internal power struggle, Thornton Township is grappling with another controversy: lapsed insurance coverage. Henyard continues to face criticism regarding her spending practices both as township supervisor and separately as mayor of Dolton
