A new kind of trap is designed to contain polar bear mothers and their cubs in the event of an oil spill

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Responders say it’s fortunate there has never been an oil spill on Alaska’s North Slope involving polar bears, but that doesn’t diminish the importance of being prepared if an emergency should occur.

“We’ve been calling it a polar bear family trap and that’s what it was designed for,” Katie Larson with the Alaska Zoo said. “The goal of that is to have this trap available if there is an emergency or a need to secure a female polar bear with her cubs so they are not separated.” Larson said for cubs, which typically remain with their mother for three years, keeping that connection is essential.
