Unlike the lighter, more family-friendly TMNT games on the market currently, The Last Ronin will focus on one of the franchise's darkest stories in recent years.
As a part of this plan, Rosen states that Paramount won't be "[dialing] back to make the game something it shouldn’t be” when adapting TMNT's more mature storylines. This makes the gaming space the perfect place to share The Last Ronin story with a wider audience. Where TV shows often have to cater more to family audiences to turn a profit with PG or PG-13-rated content, games can often dive into M-rated territory and still be financially lucrative.
These visuals already indicate a massive departure from the colorful and lighthearted side-scrolling beat-em-ups the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is known for, such as the recently acclaimed entry Shredder's Revenge. The predominantly black and white trailer showed four candles being snuffed out one by one until only one remains, indicating the deaths of three of the turtles and setting up the overall bleak tone.
