Texas lawmakers implemented several new laws on January 1, 2024, including the end of required safety inspections for personal vehicles. Other changes address property tax relief, school funding, and consumer data protection.
Most laws passed by the Texas Legislature in 2023 have been in effect for at least a year, but a few provisions are taking effect on New Year’s Day, most notably an end to required safety inspections for personal vehicles. Texas lawmakers pass laws every session that often take effect on Jan. 1 of the new year. It’s important for Texans to know what the new laws say and how they affect their daily lives.
In counties that require a vehicle emissions test, registered vehicles will still have to pass inspection. In North Texas, that includes Dallas, Collin, Denton, Tarrant, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker and Rockwall counties.A $7.50 inspection program replacement fee will be charged when registering or renewing the registration of a vehicle, trailer or mobile home. It will cost a one-time fee of $16.75 the first time a vehicle from the two previous model years is registered. Under the property tax relief legislation, school districts will be entitled to additional state aid to make up for lost property tax revenue if the districts aren’t “fully compensated” through state funds and the calculation of excess local revenue.Another provision requires the Texas Education Agency to post on its website each school district’s maximum compressed rate for the current and preceding tax years. A consumer data protection law, will empower consumers to designate an authorized agent to opt out of having their personal data sold or used in targeted advertising.Consumers can do so through an online link, an Internet browser setting or extension, or settings on an electronic device to indicate their intent to opt out
