Drivers of non-commercial vehicles will pay a fee, according to the new mandate that takes effect Jan. 1.

A new state law taking effect Jan. 1 will replace vehicle safety inspections for non-commercial drivers with a one-time fee. Drivers will pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, which will be added to the total cost when registering a vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. New vehicles purchased in Texas and not registered in Texas or any other state will be charged $16.75 to cover two years of the inspection program replacement fee, according to DPS .

Texas is ending vehicle safety inspections, to the chagrin of some: 'It really fails the logic test' The state will still require emissions tests in metropolitan counties, including: Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery counties; Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall and Tarrant counties; Travis and Williamson counties, and El Paso County.
