After 70 years Ford Motor Company has a new super-sized headquarters that officially opened Sunday, built to boost efficiency, creativity and well-being.

world headquarters called The Glass House, in Dearborn, Michigan. vacates its headquarters since the 1990’s in the sprawling ball of confusion, Detroit’s signature skyline feature, the Renaissance Center, for a much smaller space in a new building up the street. The lighted General Motors corporate logo shines from the Hudson's Detroit building Friday, October 10, 2025. Employees move in the week of January 12. GM is the signature tenant at the former J.L. Hudson's Department Store site. At 2.1 million square feet and four, sprawling open-format floors, with four courtyards and 12 acres of green space, Ford’s new headquarters is more than twice as large as the 12-story, 950,000 square foot Glass House.Ford infographic comparing its former headquarters called The Glass House with its new World Headquarters a few miles away. It’s the automaker’s sixth headquarters in its 122-year history and aims to boost collaboration while minimizing the time members of various teams need to travel between buildings in Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan campus.“It is a major game changer for us,” declared Jim Dobleski, chair and CEO, Ford Land, during a tour for media last week. “A lot of our buildings were set up so teams sat in a specific building, and then to really collaborate, you had to go to other buildings to do so. Now that we have teams more consolidated down to the campus, and we have teams co located within the buildings, they're working collaboratively together on a day-to-day basis, on an hourly basis.”Ford Motor Co. By the time this building is completed in 2027 the company expects it to be occupied by 4,500 to 5,000 workers, more than double currently working at the Glass House, and over 14,000 people within a seven-minute walk and another 9,000 people within a nine-minute drive, according to Dobleski.Indeed, walking, moving and motion are key components in the design of the new building. There are freight elevators for moving vehicles, but the myriad of open stairways were intentionally built to make sure employees stay active and productive. “When we work with designing spaces like this, we often say that if you're just thinking with your mind, you're not fully thinking, you need to think with your body, too. If you have an active body, you have an active mind,” explained Craig Dykers, founding partner, at architectural firm Even the layout of the stairways is intentional, crisscrossing each other at what Jennifer Kolstad, global design & brand director at Ford Land described as “nudge points” where employees cross paths, further boosting the collaborative theme of the building.Moving through the vast spaces, one might be tempted to mistake the new headquarters for an upscale retreat with its multitude of lounges, coffee bars, artwork and comfortable seating.Ford Motor Co. There’s 14 of what’s called “arrival spaces” where employees who aren’t based at headquarters can get some work done, meet, maybe grab some coffee, without having to enter secure areas, according to Sean Corriveau, global design studio director, Ford Land.Various food samples available at the restaurant in the new Ford World Headquarters. The vast dining area, don’t call it a cafeteria, we’re told, has eight stations offering a multitude of regional cuisines. Executive chef Grant Vella says developing menus for working people is different from when he did so at restaurants he once ran. “We have to kind of put ourselves in the guest point of view,” said Vella. “Something lighter, something heavier, something with more protein and more energy, or smoothie with high protein.” Perhaps the most dramatic difference between the outgoing Glass House and the new headquarters are the vehicle design areas and the showrooms. There are six identical design studios within the building, each dedicated to a different vehicle type.Nick Hagen/Ford Motor Co. The building’s vertical design that includes the various stairways and elevators makes it easier for members of various product design teams to collaborate and to move vehicles through, and outside the building. “What we've been able to do from just a property and people movement is an 83% reduction in time,” said Corriveau. “All of that time that would have been spent just moving from space to space is now time given back to the design teams to actually use these great spaces for what they have to do.” “It really fosters a lot of cross functional collaboration, and it really gives the teams a lot of ability just to hop over to a desk to see what their colleagues working on, help them along, give input, provide that really at the moment, input that you can't get working from home and even in our in our old building that we vacated,” added Joel Piaskowski, global Ford design director. To further evaluate and display vehicles, there’s a sweeping showroom with ten turntables, blend of natural and artificial lighting, along with a digital showroom featuring a 60 foot long-by- 12 foot tall LED screen on which full-size vehicles can be displayed and shown in various environments. “Just bringing all of these functions together in one area allows us to be so much more efficient, make decisions that much quicker, and really collaborate like we've never done in the past,” said Dobleske. Then there are the more subtle features of the new Ford HQ such as the distinctive tinting on many of the windows. Those aren’t just a collection of random black dots. They’re what Dobleske calls “frits.” Each frits is actually a tiny Ford oval, interrupted at times by arrays of numbers. Those aren’t random either. “They’re all of the patent numbers that Ford Motor Company has patents, all of our products that we've patented throughout our history are hidden inside of that frit,” said Dobleske. “So it's just kind of a little easter egg.” But those frits have a practical as well as ornamental function, as they break down the ultraviolet light that will penetrate the room, minimizing the amount of cooling or heating needs, according to Dykers. What you won’t see at the seventh Ford World Headquarters is a lot of, well, overt Ford branding or signage, aside from a white script logo at one of the main entrances and OLED welcome screen, pointed out Kolstad. Instead, there are more subtle touches such as curated artwork from the automaker’s collection and rugs with a pattern made of detached Ford ovals, she explained.“This dot piece is actually a color catalog of our significant auto colors, black, Model T, bottom left, all the way up,” said Kolstad.Ed Garsten Even as the new building takes over the role as the center of Ford’s world, there’s still plenty of construction going on, including a Ford retail store set to open the first quarter of 2026 where the public can buy Ford-branded apparel and other items-- but not actual cars or trucks, along with some vehicle display areas, Dobleske said. While overt branding may be more muted Dobleske invokes CEO Jim Farley in explaining how together with those subtle touches and overall design, visitors and employees won’t wonder where they are. “Jim Farley has said in the past, when you walk into our existing headquarters building, you're not quite sure if you're walking into Ford or if you're walking into a shampoo company,” recalled Dobleske. “This building, you know you are walking into Ford Motor Company.”
