On average, 17 U.S. veterans die by suicide every day, 71% of them by firearm, according to the 2022 National Veterans Suicide Report.
Memorial Day often calls to mind the harrowing experiences of veterans, including for Joann Haines, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam and is among the few survivors from her unit.Relying on the Veterans Affairs for PTSD therapy, Haines also took part in a program from the Utah Department of Veteran and Military Affairs that provides free gun locks for veterans.
"To me, it's anyone that feels like they're at risk or anyone that thinks someone is at risk," Pearson said.
