The Boogeyman director Rob Savage reveals he had to remove an iconic Star Wars item from his Stephen King horror movie under orders from Disney.

New horror movie The Boogeyman was forced to replace an iconic Star Wars item that appeared in the original script with something different. Adapted from the classic Stephen King short story, first published in 1973, the movie follows a young girl who becomes the target of a shadow monster following the death of her mother. Starring Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, and Vivien Lyra Blair, the $35 million movie was released June 2 to mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Originally, the script was written with Sawyer's character having a knock-off lightsaber that she would hug in bed, that would then fritz out during the scene that then became the moon ball scene. Our office was filled with different Lightsaber toys because we had to find the perfect lightsaber. So we were constantly having frustrated Lightsaber battles during prep.

Disney's Decision Makes Sense But Also Helps The Movie The decision by Disney to reject the use of a lightsaber in the movie does make a degree of sense when considering that Star Wars is a very protected brand, and arguably Disney's flagship brand. In addition to not keeping with the family appeal of its franchise putting it in a horror movie, undermining its strength for a scare makes it understandable they'd want it removed.
