This technology has several possible uses, ranging from simple activities like parcel delivery to more difficult missions in dangerous settings.
MIT researchers built a soft drone that can not only fly but also pick up and move objects, similar to a flying hand.
The authors mentioned that this drone is the “first example of a soft aerial manipulator equipped with a fully onboard perception pipeline, capable of robustly localizing and grasping visually and morphologically varied objects.”This soft drone is inspired by birds that can easily grab and carry prey to various locations. However, drones require more precise control and face challenges in performing complex flying maneuvers while clutching items.
“The few reported examples of high-speed aerial grasping rely on motion capture systems, fail to generalize across environments and grasp targets,” it added. This innovative flying robot has the ability to accurately identify and capture objects of different shapes and sizes — thanks to its advanced perception system and soft gripper. This allows it to adapt to the shape of the object it’s trying to grasp, reducing the risk of damage.
Interestingly, the drone’s new capabilities allow it to catch objects that are moving at speeds of up to 0.3 meters per second.
