The Galaxy S23 Ultra will come with a significant camera upgrade, but probably not as big as some had predicted.

Sensor size, perhaps more than the number of megapixels, is one of the main factors affecting picture quality in a digital camera. This is because a larger surface area is able to capture more light at any given moment. As a result, you get better low-light performance and faster capture in general, combined with less image noise than you would get from a smaller sensor.

Sadly it seems Samsung’s new camera won’t be taking advantage of a larger sensor, instead sticking to a design that’s very similar to the current Galaxy S22 Ultra, albeit with a massively increased resolution of 200 megapixels, up from 108 megapixels. Regardless, Ice Universe is confident that the new ISOCELL HP2 200-megapixel sensor will perform better than either of Samsung’s current 200-megapixel modules, the ISOCELL HP1 and ISOCELL HP3. All will be revealed early in 2023.
