New San Antonio staging of ‘West Side Story’ will put the audience in the middle of the Jets and Sharks

Christopher Senn, from left, and Amanda Rivera rehearse a scene as Tony and Maria in Danrie Productions' staging of"West Side Story."Ernest Sauceda doesn’t want audiences to simply come watch his theater company’s production of “West Side Story” — he wants them to feel like they are right there in the middle of it as the Sharks and the Jets do battle and Tony and Maria fall in love.

“I want people to feel the story and be in the story with the actors,” said Sauceda, who is choreographing the show and serves as Danrie’s artistic director. The musical, which hit the silver screen for the second time last year, is based on “Romeo and Juliet.” It transforms the embattled Montagues and Capulets of Shakespeare’s play into rival New York street gangs. The white Jets are pitted against the Puerto Rican Sharks, and doomed young lovers Tony and Maria are caught in the middle.

“Especially in this world right now, it’s a story that’s very important, and rather than a love story, I think it’s a cautionary tale about where we are as a society.”
