New Royal AM head coach Khabo Zondo has indicated that he's aiming to start his reign at the KwaZulu-Natal club with silverware"I hope I face one of the two, Uthongathi or Maritzburg in the second game and wish to get to the Final as well," he said.
Zondo was speaking at the launch of the 2022 Premier’s Cup held in Durban on Tuesday afternoon. The veteran coach was a surprise appointment by Royal AM having been out of the coaching game for some time, but the 60-year-old brings an invaluable wealth of experience to the Durban-based side. He also takes over a team that’s proved to be one of the heavy hitters in the league after finishing third last season, just two points behind second-placed Cape Town City.The annual two-day pre-season contest returns and will see the province’s top six sides clash in a knockout format.
In the last edition, Maritzburg United clinched the trophy when they defeated AmaZulu 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw during 90 minutes.Zondo’s charges will open the 2022 edition of the tournament against DStv Premiership new boys Richards Bay, before Motsepe Foundation Championship side Uthongathi clash with defending champions Maritzburg at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Saturday, 30 July.
The winners from those two matches will meet the next day the for the first semi-final at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, while AmaZulu will take on Golden Arrows, with the winner heading straight to the final to be played on the same day.
