Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson looks to build on the legacy of diverse programs at the Carver Cultural Community Center.
Andrea “ Vocab ” Sanderson, San Antonio ’s poet laureate emeritus, has a new role. She's now the arts education and community engagement coordinator for the Carver Community Cultural Center. San Antonio ’s first African American poet laureate, Sanderson served in that role from 2020 to 2023.
Keepers of the moment’: Carver center’s leader builds on theater’s diverse legacy in San Antonio Sanderson said she’s honored to spearhead new initiatives at the East Side center, which is steeped in history dating to 1929. From the 1940s through the civil rights era, the Carver hosted prominent African American artists, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Paul Robeson.
Vocab is our modern-day griot, Goddess of Groove and Ministress of Move For the past few weeks, she’s risen early to join Carver staff to develop community outreach activities. Sanderson is familiar with the Carver’s mission to celebrate diverse cultures. In the past, she’s collaborated with the center through an artistic residence and several performances.
Andrea ‘Vocab’ Sanderson is San Antonio’s newest poet laureate Sanderson said it's important to her to make room for the city's artists to offer a variety of courses like chess, yoga and the literary arts at local schools. She said offering enrichment programs to children who don't otherwise have access to certain forms of education is integral to her work.
