North Carolina's new congressional map has sparked accusations of gerrymandering.
The Republican-controlled North Carolina legislature has garnered criticism after passing a congressional map that could improve their party's chances of picking up U.S. House seats in next year's elections.The Senate Redistricting and Elections Committee approved a new map that divides up the state's 15 congressional districts. It favors Republicans in 10 of the state's 14 House seats. Three seats favor Democrats, and one would be competitive for both parties.
'Nickel said in a statement that he would not announce a re-election bid 'in any of these gerrymandered districts' and would only make a decision about seeking elected office 'once the courts have spoken.'During a demonstration outside the state Capitol on Wednesday, Karen Zeigler, lead organizer for Democracy Out Loud, said: 'These proposed maps further destroy the guardrails of democracy.
