James Barragán of the Texas Tribune and J. David Goodman, Houston Bureau Chief for the New York Times, join Spectrum News 1 to discuss their reports on the police response to the Uvalde shooting.

TEXAS — New reporting this week is revealing more information about what happened during the Uvalde mass shooting.

On Thursday, the Uvalde school police chief spoke out for the first time, defending his actions. Pete Arredondo has been widely criticized for his response, but he told the Texas Tribune he didn't consider himself the incident commander as the massacre unfolded. An 18-year-old gunman killed the victims behind a locked classroom door that the chief said was reinforced with a steel jamb and could not be kicked in. Officers didn't confront the gunman for more than an hour as they waited on a key to unlock the door.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reviewed body camera footage and police documents. Reporters found supervisors on the scene knew injured victims were trapped inside the classroom while they waited to confront the gunman. Capital Tonight’s Karina Kling spoke with the authors of those reports, James Barragán of the Texas Tribune and J. David Goodman, Houston Bureau Chief for the New York Times. Play the video above for that conversation.
