About a month before the 2018 gubernatorial election, then-Attorney General Mike DeWine texted FirstEnergy’s CEO Chuck Jones looking for financial support to get him over the finish line,, based on newly obtained text messages. Three days later, company executive Mike Dowling told Jones to “go ahead and call Mike DeWine on the $500k.” The state accused both Jones and Dowling of paying a $4.3 million bribe to a top DeWine appointee earlier this year.
