Union Pacific Railroad and BNSF have expanded services to allow intermodal containers to...

Carolina the dredge, which will be used in the expansion and deepening of the Houston Ship Channel, is photographed at the kick-off ceremony Wednesday, June 1, 2022, in Galveston.A new service at the Port of Houston’s Barbours Cut Terminal is helping to move containers more efficiently through the region and reducing congestion on area roads — as well as tickling the inner child of everyone who likes trains.

“It’s a good opportunity for everybody,” said Tyson Moeller, Union Pacific's general director for network development. “It takes trucks off the road. And if you think about fuel efficiency, we’re three to four times more efficient than a truck,” he continued. “So there’s economic benefits for the shippers, but there’s also environmental benefits.”

“The reason the state’s interested in it, as well, is when it’s moving on rail it’s moving on our private rail, so it’s less maintenance on the highway side, for state, county or city roads,” Moeller added. “So it does have a certain public benefit from a taxpayer standpoint.”
