Abbott and O’Rourke are clear favorites in their respective primaries, with both garnering above the 50% needed to avoid a runoff.
Where things get interesting is with current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The embattled AG is shown in the poll with 39% support, which is not enough to avoid a runoff. Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush has 25% support, followed by former Texas Supreme Court justice Eva Guzman with 13%.
Abbott, who is seeking his third term, did better than O’Rourke with Texas Independents, garnering 36% support over the former congressman’s 25%. Sixteen percent of respondents indicated “someone else” and 1% remain undecided. In preparing the poll, the Dallas Morning News and UT Tyler surveyed 1,188 registered voters Feb. 8-15. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
