The measure directs intermediate units to create a registry of approved volunteers for schools to access to match with students with an older adult who share a common interest.

A new law in Pennsylvania breaks down silos that sometimes prevent older adults from serving as mentors in school settings and sharing their knowledge, interests and hobbies with students in a school setting. File/ Staten island AdvancePennsylvania has a new law that eases the way for older adults to serve as mentors to school students of all ages.signed by Gov.

Older adults, defined as anyone over 55, would have to get a criminal history and child abuse clearance to apply as a mentor volunteer. On their application, they would indicate the schools where they’d like to volunteer. The law encourages the state Department of Education, State Board of Education and Department of Aging to develop guidelines for the program. Those agencies are tasked with creating applications that would be made available online through the departments’ websites, as well as from intermediate units, schools and area agencies on aging.
