15 people were killed and 35 others injured in New Orleans in what the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism. About 15 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured after an attack at New Orleans ' famed French Quarter Wednesday. According to former Grand Rapids Secret Service Agent Jason Russell, more blockades on streets surrounding a New Year's celebration could have kept event-goers safe.

Early New Year's Day, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, of Texas, rammed his pickup truck through a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, according to police. 'We are trying to place blocking elements so we reduce the likelihood for a high speed approach, but if you can drive around the blocking elements then they don’t really work that well,' Russell said.Since 2017, Bourbon Street has had barriers, but Wednesday's tragedy happened amid a major project to remove and replace them, according to theThe project, which began in November, was expected to wrap up in time for the February Super Bowl at the Superdome. 'I know there has been conversations about closing some of those streets in New Orleans to limit the ability for vehicles to get into those areas because this is a risk, obviously that wasn’t done before this tragedy,' Russell said.According to the former Secret Service agent, another proven way organizers could have increased security in the area was to block off streets with first responder vehicles. However, Russell told News Channel 3 that outdoor gatherings with larger perimeters are challenging for law enforcement to fully secure. “The issue with this particular event is you have such a large area, you have that whole downtown area where you are going to have people gather,' Russell said.
