A pickup truck plowed into a crowd of New Year's revelers on Bourbon Street, killing one and injuring several others. The suspect, Shamsud Din Jabbar, was killed in a shootout with police.
The suspect in the New Year's Day attack on Bourbon Street has been preliminarily identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar. Jabbar is accused of intentionally driving a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers at approximately 3:15 a.m. He died during a shootout with police. Officials say Jabbar, a U.S.-born Army veteran from Texas, had a black flag on a pole attached to the hitch of his truck. Authorities are investigating whether the flag is connected to the terrorist group ISIS.
A woman who identified herself as Jabbar's sister-in-law and requested anonymity said relatives in Texas were shocked by the news. She stated, 'I really don't know what happened. He was a good man. He takes care of his children and everything.' Witnesses described a horrifying and bloody scene as people tried to escape or take cover in nearby bars. One witness, Jimmy Cothran, a New Orleans resident, said, 'We heard the truck barrel by as more people piled in.' The FBI, leading the investigation, reported finding weapons and a potential IED in Jabbar's car and in the French Quarter. Investigators are examining at least two devices that may have been placed near the attack site. The investigation aims to determine if the devices were actual explosives and if they were functional. Authorities are also looking into whether Jabbar fired a rifle into the crowd as he drove through them. Federal officials and local law enforcement in New Orleans are investigating the incident. Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., posted on X, 'Please join me in praying for the victims and their families, as well as our first responders, in the wake of this horrific act of violence on Bourbon Street.
