The Provo temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will close next year before being rebuilt.
The Provo temple, located on the city’s east side,Outside the temple Wednesday afternoon, Tammy Watts took photos with family and said good-bye to her missionary son, Andrew, who will serve in the Bolivia Cochabamba Mission for the next two years. Watts said she didn’t know the temple was going to be reconstructed.
The Provo temple was dedicated in 1972. It has served countless college students, missionaries, and members. Church officials have not said yet how long it will take to rebuild the Provo temple. Jen Bruton is not excited for the project.Bruton was married in the Provo temple and startedin 2021 urging the church to preserve it rather than get rid of it. She said she’s received no acknowledgement of that from church headquarters. Meanwhile, plans to rebuild the sacred structure are moving ahead.
