The system will ensure doctors and nurses act on parents' concerns if they feel their child is getting sicker
The NHS is rolling out a new early warning system for doctors and nurses treating children in a bid to prevent 'avoidable deaths'. The National Paediatric Early Warning System will provide a straightforward way to track the vital signs of babies, children and teenagers. And, crucially, it will see medical staff acting on parents' concerns if they feel their child is deteriorating. Although similar processes are already in place in many hospitals, this is the first national standard.
The NHS also says it will include guidance from Martha’s Rule within the early warning system as it develops. Martha Mills, 13, died in 2021 after developing sepsis. A coroner later ruled she would most likely have survived if doctors had spotted the warning signs. Her mum has since been campaigning for patients and their families to have more power. What about an early warning system for adults? The National Early Warning System already exists for adults.
