British startup unveils Dectravalve, a multi-zone battery cooling tech that boosts EV charging speed, range, and safety.

A British thermal management startup has unveiled an advanced battery cooling technology designed to enhance the performance of electric vehicles . Hydrohertz ’s Dectravalve technology enables ultra-fast charging while enhancing battery range, lifespan, and safety.

Unlike conventional approaches that treat the entire battery pack uniformly, the technology provides precise, multi-zone thermal management, allowing individual battery modules to be optimally heated or cooled. According to the firm, maintaining consistent temperatures across all cells enables it to maximize efficiency and reliability, ultimately leading to faster charging times and improved overall EV performance. Precision thermal controlThe Dectravalve is a multi-zone valve system that redefines thermal flow control across complex systems, from EVs and data centres to agriculture and aviation. It enables precise, independent management of thermal energy across multiple zones from a single inlet, whether for heating, cooling, or energy recovery. Unlike conventional manifolds or solenoid valve networks, the Dectravalve consolidates control into a single, compact, and intelligent unit, delivering efficiency and adaptability across a wide range of applications.The system can control up to four distinct outlets simultaneously, routing thermal energy exactly where it’s needed without cross-flow. Zone-specific regulation ensures individual modules or areas receive optimal heating or cooling, while real-time adjustments respond dynamically to temperature data or system demands. Its modular design allows for easy integration into vehicles, buildings, and infrastructure, supporting both automated and manual operation, and interfacing with a variety of sensors, pumps, and logic systems.By eliminating multiple actuator valves, complex pipework, and cross-contamination between loops, the Dectravalve reduces parasitic losses and simplifies thermal system design. It operates under high pressure and temperature, is compatible with both digital and mechanical actuation, and is available in multiple materials for use in both industrial and mobile applications. Optimised EV performanceIn an ultra-fast charging test conducted with leading independent battery experts, a 100 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate EV battery equipped with Dectravalve maintained its hottest cell below 44.5°C, with a temperature difference of only 2.6°C across the entire pack. By comparison, typical fast-charging conditions in current EV models see peak cell temperatures reaching up to 56°C, with temperature differences exceeding 12°C. When cells exceed 50°C, the charging power must be reduced to prevent lithium plating and long-term damage, which can cause fast charging to taper off earlier than advertised and significantly extend overall charge times, according to Renewable Energy Magazine . The Dectravalve-equipped battery, however, kept all modules within the optimal high-power range, eliminating thermal weak spots and ensuring consistent peak efficiency even under extreme load. The results demonstrated that charging times could be reduced by up to 68 percent, meaning a 30-minute 10–80 percent charge on a 350 kW fast charger could be reduced to around 10 minutes, bringing EV charging closer to the speeds of conventional petrol or diesel refueling.Operating at ideal temperatures also boosts battery efficiency, delivering up to 10 percent more real-world driving range. For a typical mid-sized EV, this translates to an extra 30–40 miles per charge, providing greater usable driving distance, lower running costs, and reduced energy consumption.According to REM, Dectravalve significantly improves EV battery safety by capping maximum cell temperatures, reducing risks of lithium plating and thermal runaway. By maintaining all cells within an optimal temperature range, battery life is extended, the state of health is protected, and the overall lifespan is enhanced. Chemistry-agnostic and cost-effective, it optimises performance across current and future battery types.
