) - Dozens of Montgomery residents came to a “ Voices of Change ” panel and community discussion event Wednesday night to turn frustrations over gun violence into action. The event coincided with the launch of “ Save Our Streets ,” a new community violence intervention program.
They’ll go directly into communities and mentor at risk individuals while connecting them to relevant resources. It’s a part of the multi-million dollar ““They have them in St. Louis, Chicago, Louisiana, Florida,” explained Yolanda Adams, the Executive Director for the Family Guidance Center of Alabama. “It’s an evidence-based program and there’s a lot of documentation and things like that to show the success of the program.” The event was sponsored by District 4 city councilwoman Franetta Riley, who often hears concerns of violence from her constituents. “Our community wants to work, they want to put the effort in,” Riley says. “They’re looking at new things that they want to see us do, so in order for us to change the concept, we’ve got to have the community, and they’re ready to do the work and we’ve got to ask them to do the work to help us.” Young people were involved in the discussion as well, like 20-year-old Donniel Perryman. He founded a company called Double R Mindz that teaches financial literacy, and believes it is a crucial tool in combatting violence. “Financial literacy in these poverty-stricken areas, we don’t have that, we don’t know how to get money doing it the traditional way,” he explained. “Robbing, stealing, scamming, selling drugs, we don’t know how to make money besides that, so that’s all we do.” The discussion centered around the root causes of crime and how to prevent it. The community cited themes like isolation, mental health, gun laws, parental guidance and other systemic issues.
