Texas Original Compassion Cultivation, which has a facility in Austin, is among three licensed medical marijuana dispensers in Texas. The state is taking applications to increase that number. The Texas Department of Public Safety is accepting applications to become a licensed medical marijuana dispensing organization as part of the state’s effort to continue expanding its Compassionate Use Program.

Patients may be prescribed low-THC cannabis if they are diagnosed with conditions including epilepsy, seizures, terminal cancer, multiple sclerosis, incurable neurological disorders, autism and ALS. Last year, the program was expanded to include patients with cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder.A cannabis-certified physician can determine whether medical-use THC cannabis is appropriate for a patient and provide a prescription for medical marijuana through the Compassionate Use Program.

To be considered for a dispensing license, an individual, company or organization must complete the CUP-101 form and submit it online at the DPS’ website. After that, the DPS Regulatory Services Division will send an invoice — for a $7,356 application fee — via email within five business days. Those who have applied before will have the fee waived.

The DPS will issue only enough licenses “to ensure reasonable statewide access to, and the availability of, low-THC cannabis” for patients in the compassionate-use registry, department officials said in a press release.
