The new material can absorb three times more CO2 than current carbon capture technologies.
Carbon capture technology has been around for years. But they primarily focused on capturing CO2 from pollution sites such as coal and steel plants' chimneys before it entered the atmosphere. On a larger scale, we'll need complicated machines and sophisticated tech but the road ahead is riddled with challenges.Arup SenGupta at Lehigh University and his colleagues developed a new absorbent material called a sorbent that can pull more CO2 from the air than existing materials.
Dawid Hanak at Cranfield University in the UK said the research could "substantially reduce the cost of DAC".Now comes the exciting part. This captured CO2 can be converted into sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, thanks to seawater. The team said this will then be stored in the ocean, as it is an "infinite sink" for captured carbon.that naturally takes place and pose no ecological harm.
