Laundry Pod exposures and poisonings have decreased as much as poison control centers and hospitals would have hoped over the last ten years.
Published: May. 8, 2024 at 6:45 PM EDTCLEVELAND, Ohio -Liquid laundry packets continue to pose a poison risk. Poison centers in the U.S. get a call about laundry detergent packet exposures once every 44 minutes. During a recent study period, there were even 9 deaths associated with ingesting them.
“We saw that there was some improvement but not as much as we had hoped,” said Dr. Christopher Gaw, one of the study’s authors. “We saw the effects of that in our data. We saw a large number of adolescents in those one or two years, adolescents and young adults who were affected, who had health outcomes where they had to present to a health care facility, or were potentially admitted because of that challenge,” he said.
Another challenge the study found is how we’re storing these packets. Many people are taking them out of secure packaging, and using decorative, clear jars for their laundry packets, for aesthetic purposes. But it’s further confusing kinds and elderly dementia patients into thinking these are candy.
