New legislation could ban recently approved NIL for high school, middle school athletes
CLEVELAND, Ohio - New legislation is looking to reverse the legalization of Name, Image and Likeness profiting for high school and middle school students in Ohio. In November, Ohio High School Athletic Association members voted to approve NIL for high school and middle school.
The decision passed after a 447-121 vote with 247 schools abstaining. This decision allowed these athletes to get paid for their play, with safeguards in place. According to state lawmakers, those safeguards are not enough. “To change the policy in the state of Ohio, that will cause so much damage, there needs to be legislative intervention,” Rep. Mike Odioso , said. Ohio is one of many states nationwide that allow high school NIL, and with a majority of Ohio schools voting to approve it, it seems the idea of it is widely accepted. Rep. Odioso believes that the decision is not one the OHSAA should be able to make. “The Ohio legislature is more powerful than the OHSAA,” Odioso said. “That is a completely proper use of legislative power. We plan on using that.”Man found shot to death at Akron intersectionRocky River Drive in Cleveland is littered with potholes
