The new superintendent of the Diocese of Gary’s 20 schools arrived this summer from Chicago with an appreciation of Indiana lawmakers’ generosity.

Illinois, a Democratic state with a strong Chicago Teachers Union, doesn’t have a private school voucher program.A rock-solid GOP state, Indiana’s voucher program has rejuvenated Diocese of Gary school enrollment at nearly every school. Brewer estimated it’s up about 4% over last year’s enrollment of about 6,100 students in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.

Brewer, who joined the Diocese of Gary in July, replaced Joseph Majchrowicz, who retired. She was recommended by a search committee, but in the end Bishop Robert J. McClory endorsed the hiring based on her qualifications. Brewer, a native of Glenwood, Illinois, grew up in Catholic schools, graduating from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights in 1992.

She also spent three years as regional director for the Archdiocese of Chicago, overseeing 10 schools.Typically, Brewer said she spends about three days a week in her office at the diocesan headquarters in Merrillville and two days in schools. This week, she’s spent time at Andrean and Marquette high schools.
