Local leaders announced new legislation Monday, November 25, 2024 that will grant “peace officer” status to select Rochester Regional Health security employees and allow them to have greater authority. Rochester, N.Y. — Local leaders announced new legislation Monday that will grant “peace officer” status to select Rochester Regional Health security employees and allow them to have greater authority. The new law was signed Friday by Gov. Kathy Hochul. Hospital leaders said this legislation has been in the works for quite some time and will allow peace officers to support victims in urgent situations.brutally attacked and carjacked in the hospital parking garage last month. "It authorizes security officers with the appropriate training to issue appearance tickets, traffic information, allow them to make arrests,” Bronson explained. “Allow them to do constitutionally permissive searches, and to confiscate illegal firearms, and the ability to detain and under certain circumstances transport individuals." Tim Tull, vice president of safety and security at RRH, said this law will be an effective tool that will help manage criminal activity, and added RRH has spent the past two years strengthening security. "We have implemented significant improvements, including enhancements in access control, expanded camera coverage, increased patrols, improved lighting in the parking lots and launched a weapons screening pilot project here at RGH,” Tull said. "All of the peace officers will be armed, although that’s not really a change for us. Our security force has an armed contingent now.” "This law has nothing to do with whether or not security officers can or cannot carry weapons,” Bronson added. “If they are already licensed to do that, then they will be able to do that under the peace officers bill.""We’ve got to get everybody through the training," Tull explained. "We also have to work with our local law enforcement to establish MOUs and understand the boundaries, they are the ones that help us with the jurisdiction." The University of Rochester also has both armed and unarmed peace officers at its academic and healthcare facilities. RRH’s peace officers will be assigned to Rochester General and Unity hospitals.
