Before this apprenticeship program, those working towards becoming a sheriff’s deputy would go to school five days a week while maintaining a separate job to make a living.
JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. - A new recruitment tool for Florida law enforcement is giving aspiring sheriff’s deputies a chance to earn a living while training.
“Back in 2021 when Sheriff Edenfield had taken office, we were talking ways to attract new people to the field, one was through an apprenticeship program,” said Wesley Burch, a major and the Undersheriff at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. “Looking into it and seeing that this had not been done in the state of Florida, we took the initiative to sit down and try to accomplish that.
“Law enforcement is really a calling. Unfortunately, there are a lot of barriers to that calling,” explained Keith Dean, the executive director of the Florida Deputy Sheriff’s Association. “Long hours, strain on a family and financial barriers. Most candidates that are interested in becoming law enforcement officers can not afford to take off six months and go to the academy.”Grover is the first candidate in the program who is now a deputy, all thanks to this apprenticeship.
“It took the financial burden off my shoulders. I was able to go to the academy, go home and have time to actually study. It made me fully committed and fully involved, I was not a part-time student then a part-time worker somewhere. I was fully in the academy and it made it so much easier,” Deputy Grover said.Deputy Grover’s success and $750,000 in state funding resulted in law enforcement across the state implementing the program.“You are going to get a better applicant pool.
Sheriff Edenfield and those with the Florida Deputy Sheriff’s Association are thankful to Florida Senator Ben Albritton, other state legislators and Governor Ron Desantis for investing in law enforcement across the state. The apprenticeship program is open to everyone who lives in Florida, as well as those who live in neighboring Alabama and Georgia counties.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
