Defense attorneys for three fired San Antonio police officers charged in the fatal shooting of Melissa Perez want a new judge to oversee the officers’ trial.
The defense attorneys for three fired San Antonio police officers charged in the fatal shooting of Melissa Perez want a new judge to oversee the officers’ upcoming trial. During a hearing Thursday, attorneys representing the three officers — Eleazar Alejandro , Alfred Flores and Nathaniel Villalobos — argued that Judge Stephanie Boyd harbored a bias against them because one of the attorneys had filed a complaint against Boyd last year in an unrelated matter.
Trial date set for fired SAPD officers accused in fatal shooting of woman in mental crisis Judge Sid Harle, who presides over the 22 counties in the 4th Administrative Judicial Region in South Texas, will make a ruling on the motion. Perez, a 46-year-old mother of four, was killed June 23 of last year during a confrontation with police at her Southwest Side apartment. Officers were dispatched after a neighbor called 911 to report that Perez had cut the wires to the complex’s fire alarm system.
DA wants mental health records for Melissa Perez, San Antonio mother shot dead by police When officers asked Perez to walk to their patrol car with them, she grew upset, ran to her apartment and locked the front door. More than an hour later, Flores, Alejandro and Villalobos, who’d been called in as backup, fired into Perez’s apartment after she allegedly ran toward a closed patio door while swinging a hammer.
San Antonio judge’s chatty social media followers are threatening fair trials, motion says “It really does lead to chaos, especially if the jury members ignore the judges’ order not to look at anything on media,” Featherston told the Express-News at the time. Juries are instructed not to access news media reports or any information about a case beyond what they’re allowed to see and hear in court. But sometimes, they cheat.
