New Joburg mayor Jolidee Matongo urges political parties to pull together and put residents first
Proceedings led by council speaker Nonceba Molwele kicked off with councillors signing a register to determine whether a quorum could be reached. At least 136 members of council are required to reach a quorum and, according to the register, 269 councillors were present at the sitting.
City Press previously reported that the mayoral committee would likely remain the same as that which served under the late Geoff Makhubo, with the exception of the finance portfolio, which will most likely be filled by either the present chair of chairpersons at the City of Joburg, Salphina Mulaudzi, or the former chair of chairpersons, Solly Mogase.
In a statement issued by the speaker’s office, Matongo is described as a “seasoned politician” who is qualified for the position.
