New Jersey residents headed to the polls Tuesday to decide on three school bond referendums totaling $129.6 million. The largest sum, $89.1 million, was sought by the Princeton Public School District for renovations and additions at four schools.
Election Day in New Jersey brought with it three significant school bond referendums seeking a combined $129.6 million for renovations and improvements across three districts. The Princeton Public School District's referendum, the most expensive on the ballot, requests $89.1 million for upgrades at four schools. If all three questions are approved, Princeton would receive $14.8 million in state aid to help fund the projects.
The proposals include adding a gym and library to Community Park Elementary School, building an addition on Littlebrook Elementary School, adding science classrooms to Princeton Middle School, and overhauling the heating and air conditioning system at Princeton High School. The district cites imminent student enrollment growth and the need for a long-term plan to accommodate new students while maintaining their neighborhood school model and strong programming. Voters approved a similar referendum in November 2023, with 4,458 voting in favor and 1,831 voting against it. This time, the referendum is structured so that approval of the second ballot question hinges on the voter approval of the first question, and the third question's approval depends on the first two questions being approved. If all three questions pass, the average homeowner in Princeton, facing an average assessed home value of $853,136, would see an estimated $532 annual school tax increase. If only the first question, totaling $37.9 million, is approved, the average homeowner would pay an additional $222 in annual school taxes. Meanwhile, voters in Mendham Borough and Pitman also decided on school bond referendums. Mendham Borough is seeking $18.9 million for HVAC upgrades, renovations, and additions at two elementary schools. Pitman is seeking $21.6 million for improvements at both its elementary and junior/senior high schools, including HVAC upgrades, roof replacements, parking lot repairs, and track reconstruction.
