New Jersey Transit commuters are pessimistic and with good reason. They're packing themselves onto a railroad that feels like it's falling apart.

Wednesday, July 3, 2024 2:46PM"If you're in this city and this happens, you're stuck!" a commuter said."I commute in twice a week and it's a nightmare," another commuter said.

"Sometimes I'm afraid to come to work and I don't know what's going to happen. There are days I walk in Penn Station and I'm like, 'Oh no, here we go again!' It's just terrible. The service is terrible and this has been the worst year," said Victor Velez, a NJ Transit commuter. "The performance of late, across the board, has been unacceptable," New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.

Preventive inspections are being stepped up, focusing on the overhead wires that power the trains and the pantographs above the locomotives that draw the power. "It's been easier to neglect those things. It's been easier to let those things go and figure we'll catch up down the road, later. And we're paying for it," said Micah Rasmussen, Rider University.
