The Seven Wonders of New Jersey are way more wonderful; they include a temple more marvelous than the Temple of Artemis, and we have so many lighthouses we couldn’t pick just one. Same with gardens and statues. Our seven wonders are an eclectic list: the state’s most terrific (or terrifying) bridge; a refinery you can drive through, and the state’s highest point.
Many worthy contenders were left off the list: the George Washington Bridge, Eagle Rock Reservation, Island Beach State Park, Lucy the Elephant, Delaware Water Gap, The Great Swamp, Mount Mitchill, Palisades Interstate Park, and the Trenton Makes the World Takes sign (Ok, letting my hometown bias show here).The first time time I saw the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Robbinsville, I was stupified, amazed, aghast — supply your own superlatives. For an instant, I thought I had suddenly been transported to India. Maybe one could envision the temple in a more populated area — pretty much anywhere in North Jersey — but in rural Robbinsville, whose only claims to fame until now were two iconic pizzerias, De Lorenzo’s and Papa’s? The Hindu temple is architecture on a stupendous scale: 40 spires, 98 pillars, 144 carved sacred figures, 91 elephants, 13,499 individual carved stone pieces and more. It’s the largest Hindu temple in the U.S., and it’s open to the public; reservations are required on the weekends. And, believe it not, there’s some good eats inside. Deep inside the main entrance is the Shayona Cafe, with its all-vegetarian menu. The tomato and basil soup is rich, savory and immensely satisfying. And the Swaminarayan Khichadi & Yogurt, a medley of steamed lentils, rice and mixed vegetables, is superlative. Call it New Jersey’s biggest pipe dream or something out of the movie Blade Runner, an immense complex of stacks, pipes, and towers known as Bayway.
