Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Thursday sharply limiting where guns can be carried in NJ, a direct response to SCOTUS' summer ruling that expanded gun-carry rights. Gun rights groups will challenge the new law imminently in federal court.

“This law ensures that no matter what Washington might throw at us, we will keep doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our citizens," said Gov. Phil Murphy. | Seth Wenig/AP PhotoSCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. — Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation Thursday that will sharply limit where guns can be carried in New Jersey, a direct response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s summer ruling that expanded gun-carry rights.

The new law will face an imminent federal court challenge from gun rights groups seeking to overturn it. New Jersey has earned a reputation for having among the strictest gun control laws in the nation. Prior to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in, residents of the state hoping to carry a gun outside their home had to demonstrate “justifiable need” — a standard that essentially disqualified most applicants.

Murphy acknowledged the possibility of a legal challenge, but said the state was ready to defend the law.
