Looking for an authentic New York bagel or Chopped Cheese sandwich? Here's where you can get them both in Jacksonville.
The menu should help ease the cravings of homesick New Yorkers as well as others who've lamented the absence of real New York-style bagels in Jacksonville.718 Bagel Time will offer about 15 different varieties of bagels daily as well as freshly made cream cheese schmears.
The bagels are made and boiled in the Bronx then delivered to 718 Bagel Time where they are baked daily, Letchus said. There are traditional varieties such as Everything, Sesame, Onion, Plain, Cinnamon Raisin and Salt. But also specialty bagels including Chocolate Chip, French Toast, Apple Crumb and Blueberry Crumb as well as more savory or spicy ones like Asiago cheese or Jalapeno. He also said there will be at least 15 different schmears for customers to choose from for bagels in addition to butter or plain cream cheese. "We make all the cream cheeses so there are Blueberry, Strawberry, Honey Pecan, Maple Walnut and Brown Sugar. In the fall we do pumpkin spice and things like that," he said. Savory schmears include Scallion, Jalapeno, Dill Pickle and Veggie, according to the menu.The restaurant's signature sandwich — Chopped Cheese — was inspired by those popular at New York City bodegas. "Chopped Cheese is like the New York staple. Philadelphia has the Philly cheesesteak and New York has the Chopped Cheese. It's like our twist on the cheesesteak," he said."It's really popular and we're the only ones who do it." A Chopped Cheese sandwich is comprised of ground beef, onions and melted cheese mixed together then topped with lettuce and tomatoes. Another of the 718 Bagel Time's signature sandwiches is the Bando, a breakfast bagel featuring steak, egg, cheese, roasted red peppers and smoked gouda, he said. The sandwiches can be made on a bagel, hard roll, croissant or white or wheat bread, according to the menu. In addition, there will be waffles, breakfast egg platters and omelets. Lunch offerings will include sub sandwiches and daily specials, the menu shows. Letchus previously told the Times-Union that he moved to Northeast Florida to escape the ice, snow and cold weather up north. Missing the taste of home, he initially established NYC Holey Moley Bagel Shop in Orange Park and added a second store a year later in Baymeadows. Letchus said he's no longer affiliated with either of those businesses. 718 Bagel Time lists its hours as 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday and closed Monday, according to its website. Letchus hopes to ultimately add dinner service.
