Potential jurors were mistakenly told to clear their schedules for a three-day trial when the amount of evidence to be presented would take a week.“The judge said we have just had a change and realize this is going to be long. Does anyone have a conflict with this? At that point, people who had already been sworn in as jurors raised their hands,” said Amber Vazquez, an Austin criminal defense attorney.The presiding judge for County Court at Law #8 sent out a group email that included CBS Austin. In it, he acknowledged that years ago, there had previously been an issue with summoning jurors for the wrong amount of time. Judge Barrera also said in the email, "The jury selection was especially challenging for this case, and we had done great work, and just as it seemed we were going to be able to seat a jury, the case collapsed. I was extremely disappointed and on the verge of tears, hence my exasperation." The second issue is whether the court would be able to seat enough jurors. 29 of the 50 potential jurors were excused after stating they had previous knowledge of the well-publicized case. “They had the majority of the panel say they had already watched media on this case.
