Initially, Daly and his team envisioned a masonry building, in line with the long tradition of brick and stone structures here. Eventually, they shifted toward a design similar to the Brochstein Pavilion at Rice University. Inside, the lumber is installed with precision as a striking ceiling treatment, and panels of the perforated metal are used for stair rails.

Standing a few feet away, Cynthia Hurrington, communications director at the endowment, referenced the immediate outdoors:"I feel like a plant. It's energizing.", a UK-based organizer of international design competitions. It drew more than 100 entries from all over the world, virtually all of them with two or more design firms.
