Construction could begin as early as next summer on what developer Jim Gerspacher is tentatively calling Hotel Medina, a 75-room inn on South Court Street, across the road from Castle Noel, the city’s popular Christmas museum and tourist attraction.
Rendering of what is being tentatively called Hotel Medina, a new 75-room hotel planned for downtown Medina.MEDINA, Ohio – A new hotel is planned for Medina’s historic square, a first for downtown in more than a half century.
Gerspacher reduced the size of the hotel, from 99 rooms to 75, and changed the exterior to brick to better match the historic character of downtown. The building also will be set closer to the street, with parking in the rear. In July, Gerspacher purchased two adjacent properties, at 245 and 257 S. Court Street, for $900,000 and is in the process of relocating tenants. He hopes to raze the buildings sometime next year. This isn’t the first time Gerspacher has wanted to build a hotel in Medina. Back in 2019, he submitted a plan to the city to construct a hotel on vacant land on Liberty Street, just west of the square. He didn’t win that project, but he kept looking.
While Medina County is home to 14 hotels – many located near the intersection of I-71 and Ohio 18 – the downtown area hasn’t had a hotel since the 1950s, when the American House hotel was torn down near the corner of Liberty and Court streets to make room for a bank drive-up window, according to the Medina County Historical Society.
Kathy Breitenbucher, interim director of the Medina County Visitors Bureau, is thrilled with the development. “It’s so convenient to everything, with easy walking to shopping and dining. I think people will really love having it so close.”
