A quarantine has been issued 'to help businesses and homeowners recognize the insect, learn how to control it, and keep it from spreading.'
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has issued an alert that the invasive box tree moth species has been found in the state. The box tree moth, described as “a highly destructive, invasive insect new to North America” in a press release, has been found in two cemeteries in Erie County.
While it does not harm humans or threaten any food products, it is known to feed on boxwoods, one of the most popular plants used as topiaries and hedges across the state. Box tree moth eggs are clusters of flat, scale-like deposits, usually found on the underside of leaves in groups of 5-20 orange eggs.
