The 'One Big Beautiful Bill' act sets guidelines for how much money students can borrow for a professional v. a nonprofessional degree. Nursing is not on the list of professional degrees, and its exclusion is raising concerns about recruitment and retention.

) - New federal guidelines on what is considered a professional degree are raising concerns in Alabama’s nursing industry. In November, the U.S. Department of Education released a list of professional degree s, which included pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, chiropractic, law, medicine, optometry, osteopathic medicine, podiatry and theology.

With nursing being left of the list, nursing students will not be able to take out as much in loans to get that degree.Under the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ act, which was passed over the summer, students pursuing professional degrees can borrow up to $50,000 in an academic year; for nonprofessional degrees, the limit is $20,500. “I think we’ve been talking about that a lot over the last several years and I feel like this misses that mark,” said Laura Hart, executive director of the Alabama State Nurses Association. Hart said the lowered loan cap would make it harder for Alabama nurses to pay their schooling costs while still completing the required hands-on training necessary to complete their degrees. “They need those extra caps be able to get through their programs, pay their tuition, some of it helps pay their living expenses while they’re in those programs,” she said. “You’re going to make those people less likely to be able to afford the education they need to do that.” A state lawmaker, Rep. Napoleon Bracy Jr. , said he is going to be filing a bill called the ‘Alabama Professional Workforce Protection Act’, which would formally recognize careers, like nursing, as professional under Alabama law.Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
